AWAY FROM THE ORDINARY WITH MATTHIJS
Let’s start with a fun dilemma: Which period do you enjoy more at CASA—the bustling student season from September to May, or the high season when the students aren’t in the hotel?
Matthijs: “That’s an easy one—definitely the student season! The summer season is great for planning ahead and building collaborations, but the eight months with the students in the house are the most rewarding. My work becomes more dynamic with spontaneous tasks and meaningful, informal chats. I especially enjoy collaborating with students, brainstorming ideas, setting up engaging events for them and sharing laughs, even when corrections are needed – they’re still students (laughs). The energy they bring makes this period the highlight for me.”
SOCIAL PIONEERS SINCE 1957
What do you find important in society that CASA has been involved in?
Matthijs: “What I find most important in society, and what CASA – ofcourse – has been deeply involved in, is providing affordable student housing. While CASA participates in various social initiatives, for me, the focus on offering students a safe and affordable place is what aligns most with my job here. CASA has always been a reliable haven for students in Amsterdam. This unique blend of business and social purpose is something I strongly believe in, and it perfectly reflects our tagline: “Social Pioneers since 1957.”
BRIGHT VIBES
How does CASA feel when you walk into the lobby through the revolving doors?
Matthijs: “I usually come in through the staff entrance, where I can chat with colleagues right away. On other days, I enter through the lobby, which feels like stepping into a vibrant, bustling world full of guests, students, and staff. As a social person, I love that at Hotel Casa, everyone interacts across departments. With over 100 employees, it’s rare to find such a strong sense of unity where you can easily approach anyone, from our general manager to the ever busy facility department. The atmosphere here is unique, and I always walk in with a smile, excited to connect with familiar faces.”
What’s your favourite spot in the hotel?
Matthijs: “My favourite spot at Hotel Casa is definitely the student lounge. It’s a cosy and lively space, with games, comfortable seating, and work areas. For me, it’s the ideal place to connect with students, as it’s where everyone gathers at some point. Whether they’re having a meal with friends, playing ping pong or pool, watching a football match, or just enjoying a drink together, there’s always something happening. The atmosphere is vibrant and full of energy, and I always enjoy passing through, sharing a joke or two. It’s the one place that always brings a smile to my face on my way to the office.”
AWAY FROM THE ORDINARY
How does your job contribute to students having a unique experience at Hotel Casa?
Matthijs: “I’m aware of other companies in Amsterdam that offer similar services, with community builders and interns, for example. Some of our students have lived in those places, so I often ask them about their experiences and how they compare to CASA. After all, we can always learn from what others do well. The response I usually get is consistent: Hotel Casa stands out as the better option. While I may not be the one who holds all 360 students together, I do play a key role in organising events and helping students collaborate on their own initiatives.”
Unfortunately you’re trading Hotel Casa for traveling the world with your girlfriend. We for sure will miss you! What will you miss the most about CASA?
Matthijs: “One of the things I’ll miss most is my colleagues. From the moment I started working here, I felt I could be myself, all thanks to the welcoming team. A special mention goes to my manager Fé, who built the whole community and all its systems from the ground up on her own. When I joined, it felt like stepping into a warm embrace, yet she allowed me to add my own touch to the community. It’s remarkable how she trusted me with what was essentially her creation, giving me the freedom to introduce my own ideas. This trust gave me the confidence to truly thrive in my role. And of course, I’ll definitely miss the students as well!”
Thank you for your time Matthijs and it was a pleasure working with you!
Matthijs: “My pleasure!”
