When you’ve made history and now you’re the breeding ground of the young scene, the travellers and the outliers… It’s time to spoil guests and come up with something extraordinary. And something extraordinary – indeed – has been invented: the refreshing Gabbe Beer.
It’s not for no reason that the beer is called “Gabbe Beer”. Hotel Casa was founded in 1957 by, amongst others, Mr. Gabbe Scheltema. At that time, he was a student of 26 years old and did not hold any degree. He believed in the Casa project and decided to take part in the adventure. Up until now, Mr. Scheltema has always been involved. At the age of 33 he finished his law studies and became a lawyer, but never said goodbye to Hotel Casa. Whether as a Board Chairman (from 1957-1995) or today, as a board member. Back in 2007, he was even appointed Honorary Chairman and therefore we cannot leave him out in our Casa story.
What strikes him most is his experience with the changes and developments of Hotel Casa, but especially with the students themselves. Students have changed throughout the years. Casa’s first students were tranquil and compassionate, whereas the students of the late ‘70’s and ‘80’s were more rebellious. Luckily the students of today are just like angels. 😉
The Gabbe Beer unfold
As a tribute to Mr. Gabbe Scheltema, Hotel Casa and Brouwerij de Eeuwige Jeugd (literally: Brewery Forever Young) joined forces to create a refreshing beer, reflecting the ‘forever young’ feel and philosophy of the hotel. The Gabbe Beer is a fresh one, blending malted sugar sweetness with a bit of bitterness. A dash of passion fruit and citrus makes it just an exceptional beer. And the subtle taste of lime leaf serves as a perfect finish.
After a process of creating the perfect taste, it was time for the perfect packaging. If you’re aware of the story of Hotel Casa, you probably know every co-founder put in only 25 guilders at the start. The original 25 guilders note had a yellow color, and so has Casa’s beer. Following up on that, an illustration of Mr. Scheltema in his younger years was created, seamlessly fitting the character and style of Hotel Casa.
A fun fact: the Dutch word ‘Gabber’ (almost similar to Mr. Scheltema’s first name ‘Gabbe’) literally means ‘pal’. That’s why we thought this was the perfect name for this special beer!
Gabbe Beer is exclusively available at Hotel Casa Amsterdam for only €4.50.
