East57 is the spot where locals convene for an enjoyable lunch, a good talk, some relaxation or  simply for the best coffee in town. East57 is not only a famous hotspot in Amsterdam East, but it’s a unique concept because of its combination of restaurant, wine bar and coffee bar. And not just a regular coffee bar. East57 is one out of only 15 specialty coffee bars in Amsterdam.

Wait a minute. What’s specialty coffee?

Not every coffee can be called a ‘specialty coffee’. It can be compared to champagne, that only can carry a certain name when it meets specific requirements. We need to go through a few phases before we can call a coffee a specialty coffee. Phases starting from the coffee tree and its coffee beans to the actual coffee roasting process. Which type of bean is it? What does the coffee plantation look like? Are the coffee beans picked by machines or rather by hand? What does the roasting process look like? Based on questions like these, the bean is scored, so called ‘cupping’. The bean can get any score from 0-100 on the classification scale, any score above 80 can proudly wear the name of specialty coffee.

Fun facts

Just to give an idea of the coffee business, we shortlisted you a few facts:

  • The world counts about 124 different types of coffee beans. Of which every bean has its very own taste, just as wine grapes basically.
  • The job of a barista is never to be underestimated. Whereas a sommelier can influence the taste of wine by serving it on the right temperature, a barista can influence the taste of coffee even more. Think of differences in pulverizing the beans, the freshness of the beans, the water used, the filters used, the temperature and the speed of the coffee making. It all adds up to the final taste.
  • Amsterdam counts 15-20 specialty coffee bars, of which East57 is proud to be part of.

East57, the specialty coffee bar

So, we got you covered on what a specialty coffee bar is, and you now know there are a few spots in Amsterdam where you can taste your daily shot of caffeine. But let’s be honest. The best way to drink good coffee is with good company in a great ambiance. Our baristas Erhan and Karina can tell you everything about the process of specialty coffees and give them an exceptional flavor that cannot be found in another place. Why? Ok, to start with, Erhan has Turkish roots and therefore brought a very special and authentic Turkish way of coffee crafting to the table. Besides espresso and filter creations, East57 also uses the so called Cezve for brewing coffee. Which is a special (Turkish) copper pot with a silver layer on the inside. By heating up the coffee in this specific way, the taste intensifies and takes a regular coffee to a whole new level. East57 is the only (specialty) coffee bar in Amsterdam that practices this craftsmanship.

Erhan and his team are ambitious! In 2017 the specialty coffee bar gained a spot in the Misset Koffie Horeca Top 100, for 2018 the bar strives for a position in the top 5. Not only by serving good coffee, but by being different from the mainstream coffee bars in Amsterdam. And since the World championship for Specialty Coffee is being organized in Amsterdam for the upcoming year, it’s obvious that the team will compete for the title of ‘Best Coffee Specialist in the world’. Erhan earlier won 4th place in the national championship. So, on to the next. Something bigger, something more exciting.

Oh, and of course all the coffee specialists visiting Amsterdam during that week are more than welcome to stay at Hotel Casa Amsterdam. The biggest advantage: drinking good roasted coffee from 7 in the morning till 11 in the evening.

Guest coffees at East57

From the beginning, East57 has been serving the specialty coffees of CoffeeCompany, but that’s not enough for enthusiasts who keep on learning and exploring. Therefore, East57 turns into a multi-specialty-coffee-roast-bar, starting somewhere in October. Every few weeks a new ‘guest coffee’ enters the building and gets all the attention that it earns. Perfect for coffee lovers who’d love to try something new.

East57: Not just a talent pool

3 years ago, Erhan started building the specialty coffee bar of East57 as it is today. After tons of workshops and courses he is an authorized specialty trainer. In possession of an incredible drive and all the knowledge needed, Erhan educates his fellow team members in becoming specialists as well. It started out with Karina – at this point a worthy opponent of Erhan -, he now educates Daisy, Marlijn, Alicia, Kim and Oscar with lots of enthusiasm.

Let’s not forget the Tea lovers

Offering good roasted coffee doesn’t mean you must hold back on superior quality tea. The coffee bar of East57 in Amsterdam East also offers specialty teas. A special collection of ‘Crusio Tea’ from Kiona Malinka. From black tea to white tea, from green tea to oolong or macha. The best indulgent for tea lovers. More about that next time!
