King’s Day, the one and only day our country literally turns orange, music blows into every corner and local street markets are all over the place! A day you don’t want to miss out on. Here’s why:

The vibe

Every year, on the 27th of April, the Dutch celebrate the birthday of their King outrageously, like no expense is spared. The national festivity leaves no one out and is probably the longest during party within the country, starting on King’s Night (the night before King’s Day) and ending on the early party hours of the 28th of April. The whole country turns orange in a pleasantly surprising way, and the best thing is: this festivity is just at your fingertips! Cause where else to experience all this revelry than in our capital city? Where the orange colored ornaments spill into every corner, every street, every park and every – on this day; packed – Amsterdam canal.

Markets

As a city built on trade, the locals love to haggle and bargain. The streets and parks turn into street markets organized by kids as well as adults. The so-called Vrijmarkt gives you the opportunity to get your hands on the coolest second-hand treasures! Besides, if you’re not really into shopping, you for sure need to visit some of the food and drink stalls. Cause really, it’s a must to give our old time favorite Dutch poffertjes a try.

Party like a Rockstar

Obviously, a good King’s Day cannot evolve without some decent party flashers. Whenever you’d like to enjoy a good one, head to one of the big parties such as Loveland and Kingsland Festival or dare a little dance at NDSM Vrijhaven – perfect for our free birds. Not really into planning your day or pre-booking your ticket? Stroll down the streets, visit one of the squares where live music spills, hit a true Amsterdam Café in the Jordaan, or try to hop on a brightly decorated boat for a King’s Day on the water.

You can go CRAAAAZY

The Dutch are known for their down to earth mentality. Their famous expression: ‘Doe maar gewoon, dan doe je al gek genoeg’ (meaning: Just act normal, you’re crazy enough already) is heavily denied on this day. On April 27th, everyone can go a little cray cray. Dress yourself up from top-to-toe in orange, have a drink, do a dance, sing out loud and party with and like the locals!

Amsterdam

Since you’re in Amsterdam – right? – you’d better stay in the most trendy and upcoming part of the city; Amsterdam East. Starting point for this bustling party is Hotel Casa, just meters away from the Frankendael Park and train and metro station Amsterdam Amstel. Quite an asset, since trams and busses will face a challenging time on King’s Day. Besides, it’s the best hang out in town where locals and newbies from all around the world mingle seamlessly. In short, the party starts here. See you! All dressed up in orange of course….
