YAEL WASSEN
Yael Wassen is a visual artist based in Amsterdam who discovered a new form of communication through painting, using colors and shapes as a means of empowerment. Her background in political philosophy lends depth to her abstract works, which express elusive feelings and thoughts. By combining acrylic paintings with other mediums like large fabrics and oil pastels, she creates art that invites personal interpretation and aims to transform vulnerability and sensitivity from a potential burden into a strength.
De toekomst (zal goed zijn)
The future (will be good)
Acrylic and pastels on canvas, 40x50cm (2x)
€650: info@yaelwassen.nl
‘’These paintings depict myself now, looking at my younger self when I was coming to terms with my identity and had not yet come out. During those times, I could feel lonely and misunderstood. But I know now that however challenging that journey, it is worth chasing it. There lies so much beauty and power in giving yourself space to figure out who you are – and then slowly grow to be that person. With these paintings I wanted to tell my younger self (and all others that can relate to one of these versions): your future will be even brighter than the future you now are dreaming of.’’
De seizoenen in mij
The seasons within me
Acrylic on canvas, 100x70cm
€700: info@yaelwassen.nl
“In my heart and mind there are two seasons that seem to naturally take turns. Some days, weeks, months, I find myself effortlessly blending in with the world around me. In this state, connections with people and places give my daily life meaning. However, some days my inner landscape suddenly shifts and I become immersed in inner contemplation. Over time, I’ve come to recognize the value in embracing these fluctuations. I realized how important it is to give space to questions and doubts too. I see them as seeds, eventually blossoming into art.’’

Now these
people
are my home
And their walls
gently grow
alongside me
“A friend once told me about coming in, referring to the process after coming out, when you try to figure out what implications your queerness has in terms of belonging. The term resonated with me: while coming out can be a very individual (or lonely) process, thinking about queerness in this way emphasizes its collectiveness too. Being queer is not only about defining yourself, it also is about being part of a community: learning about its history, culture and your place within it. For me, this is an ongoing process – as it is within this community more than anywhere else that I feel safe to learn, evolve and grow.”
Ik wil dat vriendschap heilig is, het als het huwelijk (tot de dood ons scheidt)
I want friendship to be holy, just like marriage (until death tear us us apart)
Acrylic on canvas, 50x60cm
€600: info@yaelwassen.nl
“This painting is an ode to friendship. To friendship that is evident, to friendship that is confusing, to friendship of which only the memory remains. It reflects its loyalty, its grey areas, and most importantly: the subtle but sincere love it often holds. Let us not only celebrate and value romantic love, but also all the different forms of love we are capable of.’’
